Who I am

As a consultant independent social worker,   and community artist, I have led numerous innovative and creative projects.  I hold a Doctorate in Education and am a registered social worker with extensive experience working in a variety of  community settings. I am a senior lecturer in social work at the University of Winchester and a practice teacher for social work students studying at undergraduate and post graduate levels.

Creativity is a vital skill for addressing the needs of service users, ensuring that our work remains relevant and evidence-based. I am deeply committed to the principles of community development, focusing not only on the growth and development of services users regardless of their background,    but also on fostering positive change within communities. Funding

I  have had success in raising over £6,000,000 for many  projects in the voluntary sector in Hampshire.  I began by working with different communities, and  set up a variety of community organisations in the area. I  supported them through the process of applying for charitable registration.

In one rural community I  campaigned for free transport to school, and then worked in the local school providing inclusion projects such as circle time and one to one support for children who faced exclusion.

I worked with  committees of voluntary organisations  in the area  to apply for funding and in two cases helped them to gain funding for their own building – these community centers now provide a meeting place on the doorstep of communities.

Research

I I hold a Doctorate in Education and am a registered consultant social worker with extensive experience of working in community settings.

I have undertaken several pieces of qualitative research on the health and of Gypsies and Travellers  for agencies such as the University of Central Lancashire, Community Action Hampshire and  local authorities. In 2014 I led   the accommodation needs assessment of Gypsies, Travellers and Travelling Show people for   the consortium of District Councils in Hampshire.

Support for Gypsies and Travellers

Dedicated initiatives addressing the specific needs of Gypsies and Travellers.

It was in my work as a community worker in an inner city, that I first began to work with Gypsy families on various sites and I imitated a number of projects aimed at challenging discrimination across the South coast.

I have facilitated a number of training programmes on culturally competent practice for staff within a variety of front-line services and have run training programmes within the community.

The Forest Bus

My role at the Forest Bus as General manager

The Forest Bus (a registered Charity and Company limited by Guarantee) was a mobile community project which from 1993 - 2014 delivered community development work in rural areas to socially excluded groups primarily within the New Forest, but also in other areas of Hampshire and the Dorset borders. We did this by taking our mobile community centres into areas where there are no meeting places or other amenities. We provided a focus for the local community to participate in a range of activities. Primarily we responded to requests from a variety of sources to go into a locality, provide a venue, staff and resources so that we  stimulated activity, resulting in change.
